Beauty & Truth

Have you ever been asked the question, "Do you believe in absolute truth?" My response to that question is more than a simple "yes," because I know Absolute Truth personally.

When God made Himself man through Christ, He showed us truth about about Himself, about Heaven, and more importantly about ourselves. Jesus said "I AM the way THE TRUTH and the life and no one comes to the Father except through me."

And that's what we sing about when we sing songs like "Beautiful One" by Tim Hughes. We're not singing about how physically attractive Jesus is. In fact, the prophet Isaiah tells us that "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him" (Isaiah 53:2).

When we sing of beauty, what we're really singing about is Truth with a capital "T." We have to get around this idea that beauty is always a sense of aesthetics - a subjective personal preference of how pleasing something is.

The ancient Hebrews saw beauty as something more. When they said that something was beautiful, they were saying was that it was suitable, fitting, or right. It was "good" as God created and intended - not corrupted and perverted. Think about that when you look out over the mountains at a breathtaking sunrise (see the current Featured Photo to the right).

And let's think about that when we sing songs about the beauty of Christ. He is the embodiment of Truth.
