So here goes my second and final article this year.</i>
<br />

<br />
Last year, I asked the question, “Would there be a victory in 2013?” I will let you read on and judge for yourself. What I can say is that, while not as difficult as previous years, 2013 was still a challenging and often painful year to endure.
<br />
<br />
Circumstances have steadily improved for the Powells in 2013, as we have adjusted to a lifestyle that we never desired. Day by day, we continue to ask ourselves what God is doing in our lives by allowing the hardships we have encountered over the last three years since closing Encounter Church.
<br />
<br />
The ministry we engaged in through Encounter and in Helena, Montana, was such a large part of our lives. And over the last three years, we have drifted away from that type of ministry. I still long to engage in that type of <a href="http://esomething.blogspot.com/2009/02/are-you-ready-to-be-dangerous.html" target="_blank">“dangerous”</a> ministry again, as soon as God allows and orchestrates.
<br />
<br />

WORK PROSPECTS</div>
If we look at things honestly, we are in a better place than a year ago. I am still employed for a full-time job with insurance benefits. Things are very tight financially, and my pay is significantly lower that industry standard for the work I do. But jobs are difficult to come by and so we are managing as best we can.
<br />
<br />
Oddly enough, the very situation that I fled California from, the very situation that I said I did not want to get into coming back, is the very situation I am currently in - a full-time secular position with freeway commutes, and very little time with my wife and sons. It hurts to be where eI am now, and yet I will endure until our situation changes.
<br />

Andrea was finally able to secure a wonderful position the Custom Floral Designer for the Michaels Arts & Crafts store in La Verne, California. She is receiving many positive reviews (and positively impacting sales) in the the store district. Additionally, she really enjoys the work.
<br />
<br />
It is also good news that Andrik graduated from Summit High School here in Fontana. He is now attending Chaffey College and finding it very difficult to secure any classes at all. Fortunately, we were able to get him hired as a Web Design Intern at Lunarpages where I work.
<br />
<br />
Kellin is doing very well in Middle School here with nearly all A’s in his classes. He has begun to make friends in school and begun to adapt to this lifestyle called Southern California.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top: 3px;">
MINISTRY UPDATE</div>
While I have made the connections I can here in Southern California, ministry work is difficult to find. The culture of faith here in Southern California seems much more corporate and less open to risk and adventure than in other places.
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dzeC4--1coM/UrxyV2TyOhI/AAAAAAAAJM8/r7xHmNUokmw/s1600/Vine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="" border="0" height="138" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dzeC4--1coM/UrxyV2TyOhI/AAAAAAAAJM8/r7xHmNUokmw/s200/Vine.jpg" title="" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Vine Church</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We had been attending The Vine Church in Rancho Cucamonga, a 13+ year-old church plant still struggling to survive, much like Encounter.
<br/>
<br />
Having made some friends there at The Vine, having gotten plugged in with a small group, and even met with the Pastor and rehearsed with the band, there seems to be some barriers and/or differences there. The Vine seems to be a forward thinking, community-minded church, but still much more “safe” than our personalities. We are still not sure where we belong.
<br />
<br />
In the meantime, the church where I served as Worship Leader for the 4 years before we moved to Montana has experienced some difficulties that led to a church split. They lost their staff, elder leadership, and nearly half the congregation. It was because of this (and my connections within the SBC and CBA denominations) that I received a call from the church to essentially serve as an interim worship leader there beginning November 24.
<br />
<br />
Our hopes and prayers are to serve as an influence, and a source of spiritual guidance and reasoning there, as we lead worship each week. Perhaps we can help renew the church’s sense of purpose while helping them develop an outward focus to change the the community around them.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top: 3px;">
STILL SEEKING A HOME</div>
It took over two years, but our Montana home finally sold in April 2013. The market is the complete opposite here in Southern California. Home for sale are hard to find, overpriced, and difficult to secure. Since April, we have made and lost offers on 11 houses, and that is with a nearly 50% down payment.
<br />
<br />
Just this November, our offer for a home was finally accepted, nearly a year and half since we began looking. Things were looking good for the sale and we were expecting to close escrow and move in just before Christmas. However, at the last moment the financing options changed from what we were originally promised. We were instead offered a risky loan proposition with an exorbitant interest rate and we had no other decision but to back out of the deal.
<br />
<br />
So we find ourselves at the end of 2013, still without a home. I never expected that a year and a half would pass without finding a new home. To add to the disappointment, it looks as though it may be yet another 3 to 18 months before we can begin looking again.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top: 3px;">
CAUSE TO LOSE HOPE?</div>
With all this said, we are really just trusting in God. I experience times when I feel that there is no longer hope. I sometimes feel that God has abandoned us. At the same time, I know that it is not true. I know that He is there, helping us with each painful step forward, He is orchestrating His will for us during the very moment I write this.
<br />
<br />
Oh, how I have wrestled with God over these last three years and it does not look like it will end any time soon. One thing I do know, is that we, all of us, were meant to shine. We were created and touched by God to make a positive difference in this world...to shine no matter where we are.

<br />
I hope I haven't left you hanging for too long. As I wrap up some of our challenges, I realize I can't really put into words all that we have gone and are still going through. Let me pick up from my last update.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:3px">CATCHING A BREAK</div>
After interviewing for several Marketing & Communications Graphics Positions, I was able to start a new full-time job in mid-October. I am now still employed at <a href="http://www.lpwebhosting.com/" target="_blank">Lunarpages</a>, an internet hosting and services company based out of Anaheim, California. As a Web Designer & Integrator there, I am creating custom CMS websites for companies and individuals from literally all over the world. While the pay could be better, this full-time position is certainly a step up from my work at Staples and I am gaining valuable experience. Our full insurance offering starts February 1. While I am saddened we have had to wait this long for Kellin, I am still grateful that we may be able to follow up on his medical care soon.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:3px">
HOME FOR SALE IN MONTANA</div>
We've had some activity with people looking at our home for sale in Montana. At one point in November, we had a buyer lined up and a contract signed. Unfortunately the buyer backed out, afraid of such a commitment in this economy. We had already started looking at houses here in Southern California and were getting used to idea of having our own place <i>(and the kids sleeping in real beds)</i>. It was, and continues to be a huge disappointment. It seems our life is largely on hold until our home sells.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:3px">
ANDREA'S WORK PROSPECTS</div>
Andrea has been looking for positions as well. With her experience as a shift manager at Great Harvest Bread Company in Helena, she was excited to transfer into a position possibly at <i>Panera Bread</i> or the <i>Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf</i>. She also applied to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, and more. So far she has not secured a position but we are still hopeful for the extra income.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:3px">
MINISTRY</div>
One of the most difficult transitions for us moving to California is the lack of ministry opportunities. There are certainly many churches here, but no real paid minatory opportunities so far. Additionally, it has been difficult for us to connect with a new church family as we still feel unsettled as if God has no home for us.
<br />
<br />
Days still come where we question our decisions, we question what God wants for us, we even wonder if moving here to California was a mistake. Certainly I am back into the same routine I was in before, nearly 10 years ago. But what other choice did we really have?
<br />
<br />
I dare not compare our experiences over the last year to those of Job, certainly things could be much worse. Perhaps Joseph's trials are a better comparison. Even though it often feels like it these days, I know in my heart the He is not done with us yet. I am still trusting that He moves mightily in our lives soon. We are simply praying that God is using us to His glory, even though it doesn't feel like it right now. Would you commit to pray with us?<br />

<br />
<br />
We then made the two-day drive <i>(with only a little drama)</i> from our empty home in Montana to Southern California ready to start over again. At the time, I don't think we anticipated the challenges ahead.
<br />
<br />
Andrea's parents have been gracious to allow us to stay in their guest bedroom, but things are definitely crowded. Andrik and Kellin have been sleeping on the floor in the office for three months now. Andrea's parents have also been helping out in other ways. We are so grateful for these blessings.
<br />
<br />
It was also a blessing to transfer to the <i>Staples Best Copy & Print Center</i> here in Ontario, California. A "Best" Copy & Print Center stands out in service and quality from standard <i>Staples Copy & Print Centers</i>, so it was quite an honor to be accepted into the position. However, I did not get the hours I had hoped, so I continued to look for a better position.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:8px">
DIFFICULT TIMES</div>
Even with help from family, things continued to be tight financially. At one point, I was bringing home just $138 per week for our family of four. Since my <a href="/2012/04/miracles-healing.html">medical scare</a> last February, our healthcare costs have increased to over $300 per month for medications without insurance <i>(nearly the same with the limited insurance offered by Staples)</i>. My mom has been helping in that area.
<br />
<br />
To further help with costs, we set our pride aside and applied for MediCaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program <i>(SNAP - formerly known as food stamps)</i>. The kids were accepted for MediCaid coverage and our family has received SNAP assistance since November. For a man who is highly and uniquely skilled in two separate career tracks and educated with a post graduate degree, the turn of events of 2012 have been huge.
<br />
<br />
I am truly a broken man.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:8px">
THE ACCIDENT</div>
It wasn't soon after, that we experienced another setback in these difficult times. I received a call one afternoon at work from Kellin's middle school informing me that he had been in an accident on his bike — he was on his way home from school when he collided with some piping in the sidewalk.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vrk-VNbrlzM/UOpEGv8CzQI/AAAAAAAAI6A/iAlkjyVtQbY/s1600/kellinface.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" height="400" width="254" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vrk-VNbrlzM/UOpEGv8CzQI/AAAAAAAAI6A/iAlkjyVtQbY/s400/kellinface.jpg" style="clear:right; float:right; margin:4px 8px 20px 20px""/></a>He was thrown from his bike landing face-first on the pavement. While he still does not remember getting from the scene back to the school <i>(a concerned parent helped get him and his belongings back)</i>, he does remember seeing a lot of blood.
<br />
<br />
In the end, Kellin had broken his nose and lost a permanent front tooth. At this point, it looks as though a second front tooth will also be lost for good.
<br />
<br />
On MediCare in California, it was nearly impossible to find a doctor to see Kellin. We ended up at the emergency room of a local hospital where they did very little. Follow up care has been just as challenging.
<br />
<br />
We finally found a specialist to see Kellin about his nose after the intense swelling subsided. The dentist we found that actually accepts MediCaid has still not contacted us and seems elusive as we try to follow up with care for his missing tooth.
<br />
<br />
We are still praying for help and a resolution to Kellin's heath needs.
<br />
<br />

LOOKING BACK ON 2012</div>
As I look back at 2012, I can honestly say that it was THE most difficult year of my life. I had no idea last January that it would be so. Even though we had just <a href="/2011/08/bringing-encounter-church-to-close.html">closed the doors</a> of <i>Encounter Church</i> and looked to God's new adventures for us, we were filled with <a href="/2012/01/2012-will-be-year-of-change.html">hope and trust</a>.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZsQHroe2BE/UOjrDampopI/AAAAAAAAI5k/8wruQ5ZxffA/s1600/IMAG0899.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" height="239" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZsQHroe2BE/UOjrDampopI/AAAAAAAAI5k/8wruQ5ZxffA/s400/IMAG0899.jpg" style="clear:right; float:right; margin-left:1em; margin-bottom:1em"/></a>Working at <i>Staples</i> as a Copy & Print Pro certainly did not pay the bills and the continued poor economy was not opening any doors for paid ministry positions anywhere in the country.
<br />
<br />
We followed God's lead to explore Seattle and made some <a href="/2011/10/new-adventure-for-powells.html">great connections</a> there, but nothing that would help our family survive. Early in 2012, I also experienced a scary <a href="/2012/04/miracles-healing.html">medical situation</a> that increased our need for strong financial stability.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; margin-top:8px">
MOVING ON</div>
In my <a href="/2012/07/personal-confession.html">last post</a>, I made the statement "We must be moving on soon." And so the final catalyst for our "moving on" lay in the need to financially support and provide the best life experience for our family. We could no longer do so in Helena, Montana.
<br />
<br />
After much prayer and consideration, our only true option was to move back to Southern California. I knew I could transfer my Staples position and we could stay with family for a season. Because I am uniquely qualified both in <a href="http://www.esomething.org/ecpowell" target="_blank">Ministry</a> and the <a href="http://ecpowell.carbonmade.com/about" target="_blank">Marketing & Communications Arts</a>, I was sure I could secure a related position in SoCal despite the depressed economy.
<br />
<br />
And so we did move. With much excitement and some trepidation, I brought the kids down to their grandparents at the beginning of August for the start of school in Fontana. Andrea and I followed just a month later to also stay with her parents.
<br />
<br />
It had been exactly eight years TO THE DAY since our move to Montana. Our <a href="http://tours.tourfactory.com/tours/tour.asp?t=861045" target="_blank">empty home</a> was still on the market waiting for a buyer, and a new life transition awaited us in a new place.

I confess that I don't always trust God. I know, I'm a pastor, I lead congregations in worship, I even followed God's call to <a href="http://www.encounterhelena.org/" target="_blank">plant a new church</a> here in Helena. But the truth is that, like many of you, I struggle with trusting in God.
<br />
<br />
I recently wrote of <a href="http://esomething.blogspot.com/2012/04/wait-verses-go.html">"Waiting" versus "Going,"</a> or more accurately "Waiting on the Lord." The foundation of waiting on the Lord to move in your life really comes down to trust. <br />
<br />
While my mind understands that I must wait for Him to open doors and opportunities, my heart aches. It aches as I begin to ponder lies about whether He really cares, whether He really has His best planned for me, and sometimes even whether He really exists at all. It seems that I don't always trust Him.
<br />
<br />
Honestly, life is not great right now. We are really struggling to make ends meet financially. We are struggling to connect as a family. What is even more difficult at times is the feeling of hopelessness that overcomes me – it seems like there is no escape from our situation.
<br />
<br />
With all this said, let me assure you that I am not losing faith. I am simply acknowledging, like King David in the Psalms, that there are difficult seasons in life. There are trying times in which we are faced with a choice — to loose heart or to seek Him ever so diligently. I choose the latter.
<br />
<br />
You may know that in the last two months, we have been coaching/consulting the worship ministry at <a href="http://www.helenaheadwaters.org/" target="_blank">Headwaters Covenant Church</a>. It has been a joy to encourage and challenge the team there to step out of the familiar and into the area where "the magic happens." They are an amazing group of people striving to be faithful to what God has called them to be in Helena!

At Headwaters, Pastor Seth has recently been speaking on the Psalms. And as you read through the Psalms, you can't help but acknowledge the heartfelt honesty of David's struggles in the difficult seasons of life.<br />
<br />
Those are the times, we are called not to pull away, but to <a href="http://bible.us/ps3.4.niv84" target="_blank">cry out to God</a>. His promise to us is that as we draw close to Him, <a href="http://bible.us/jas4.8.niv" target="_blank">He will draw close to us</a>.
<br />
<br />
I can identify with Pastor Jack Hayford who once commented on his lifting of hands in worship. Everyone thinks that I am having this amazing God-moment, and yet I am lifting my hands as I struggle, asking God to carry me through this next season.
<br />
<br />
As the Summer progresses, we will be making some important decisions. We must be moving on soon. I wish I had more clarity about where God wants us. I wish there was a ministry position for us already in the works. But one thing is clear, God desires us to take our next step before this coming Fall.
<br />
<br />
And so I am asking two things of you who are willing...
<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="font-size: 14px;">
<div style="color: #dd4300; padding-bottom: 5px;">
I ask you to pray for us.</div>
<i>Pray for clarity from God about our next steps, pray for God to orchestrate our next adventure, and pray that we would hear Him and be obedient to His calling.</i>
<br />
<br />
<div style="color: #dd4300; padding-bottom: 5px;">
I also ask for your active help in networking.</div>
<i>I am seeking positions in professional Graphic Design and Church Ministry. In the end, it will be one or the other that will draw us to our next location. Our desire and hope is that there is a paying ministry position connected to the worship arts where I can help a church move to the next level.</i>

In case you were wondering, the Powells are still in transition. Our home is still for sale and we are confirmed that God has His next adventure planned for us outside Montana.
<br />
<br />
What is holding us back? We are waiting for is His calling and orchestration in our lives to make that happen. Over the last months, it has become clear to us that we need to land in a situation where we can survive financially. While my heart is for new churches and church planting, we have not yet found the situation where we could make a difference and still survive.
<br />
<br />
We have been so blessed over the last months to meet such amazing people involved in some exciting ministries. How I wish we could get involved and help in every situation!
<br />
<br />
But as I've been holding down from three to four jobs simultaneously since October, I'm learning that our next situation needs to be fully devoted to one effort or another. Spreading myself thin takes its toll on both myself and our family.
<br />
<br />
My hours at Staples have been cut dramatically and so I've even been looking for a more substantial position here in Helena, but am still seeking out positions throughout the Western states (although I'm not sure Texas counts as Western). I've been broadening our opportunities by looking for Graphic Design and Marketing positions as well as ministry positions in the Worship Arts or maybe an Associate Pastor position. Please be praying for us as God guides and moves mountains for us.

<br>
<br>
While I've been immersed in music, worship, and church planting for the last 15 years, much of my creative efforts have been spent more on effective leadership, discipleship, and ministry rather than my personal love of songwriting.
<br />
<br />
I've been a songwriter, developing my craft since I was at least 16 years old. Even at that age, I was fortunate enough to gain experience performing my own original music at a small restaurant in my home town.
<br />
<br />
In my college years and beyond, I took it further by joining forces with another skilled musician and we formed the band Turning Keys. Our claim to fame was opening for Flock of Seagulls a few years after their heyday.
<br />
<br />
It was around that time I became a follower of Jesus and it took me a while to explore what that would mean for my art and identity. Of course years later, God has used those skills and talents while developing new ones in leading worship for His people. I learned how to play and lead a band in a live worship environment.
<br />
<br />
So with this break in paid ministry, God has stirred up those creative juices for songwriting again. I've been working on recording a few standard worship songs in the studio, as well as writing some new songs as well. While we are still mixing and mastering these, here are a couple preliminary audio clips I hope you enjoy.

I thought and prayed, "If only I could become healthy again, I would be able to do so much for God. I would seize the day."
<br />
<br />
The idea of standing on the sidelines has always seemed especially absurd to me, and yet I suddenly felt as though I could have, or should have, done more.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; padding-top: 15px;">
TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM</div>
I guess I have always been a "take the world by storm" kind of guy and being incapacitated only intensifies the natural desire in me to risk it all for Jesus.
<br />
<br />
The biggest, most important steps I have take in my life have been steps of faith following Jesus into the unknown; leaving a full-time, well-paying corporate position to pursue ministry; moving our family to Helena, Montana, what seemed like the "ends of the earth" at the time; announcing our desire to follow God on an adventure to plant a new non-traditional church in a place where traditional churches thrive.
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; padding-top: 15px;">
SEEKING THE NEW ADVENTURE</div>
So now I look in retrospect at the last eight months since we closed the doors of Encounter Church. Andrea and I were sure God would open specific doors quickly and whisk our family away to another part of the country. The first couple of weeks we visited an amazing ministry, a new church plant in South Jordan, Utah, and we were sure we would plug-in there. I Skyped extensively with church planters and ministry leaders in Texas, Missouri, Massachusetts, Virginia, and California (not to mention several opportunities right here in Montana). In three separate trips, I met with a number of church planters doing amazing work for the Kingdom in Seattle.
<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Met with ministry leaders and led worship at <a href="http://www.onecommunity.tv/" target="_blank">One Community Church</a> in South Jordan, Utah — a unique ministry in a stronghold of the Mormon faith.</li>
<li>Talked with <a href="http://www.healingplacechurch.org/elpaso/" target="_blank">Healing Place Church</a> doing amazing ministry in El Paso, Texas.</li>
<li>Considered moving to Springfield, Missouri with another church planting friend.</li>
<li>Made an East-coast connection with <a href="http://www.sovg.us/" target="_blank">Sovereign Grace Church</a> in Boston, Massachusetts.</li>
<li>Was considered for <a href="http://www.area10church.com/" target="_blank">Area 10 Faith Community</a> in Richmond, Virginia.</li>
<li>Considered an inner-city ministry at <a href="http://www.thepathwaytacoma.com/" target="_blank">The Pathway</a> in Tacoma, Washington.</li>
<li>Talked extensively and led worship for <a href="http://www.emmausnw.org/" target="_blank">Emmaus Church</a> in Bothell, Washington.</li>
<li>Met with and talked about joining two other different ministries in Auburn, Washington.</li>
<li>Been invited to be a part of starting a new church in Omaha, Nebraska with a friend right here in Montana.</li>
<li>Made a connection with <a href="http://www.rccmissoula.org/" target="_blank">River City Church</a>, another new church plant in Missoula, Montana.</li>
<li>Began discussion with a church planter, planting <a href="http://theelementchurch.org/" target="_blank">Element Church</a> in North Phoenix.</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; padding-top: 5px;">
HURRY UP AND WAIT</div>
From all these connections and more, we've felt a desire to go forward — but not yet a call. The pieces are just not coming together financially, geographically, or socially to facilitate that big step in to our new life adventure. Leaning on my passion and experience, I have been seeking to connect in some area of worship arts, and yet I have been offered positions in missions, youth, and discipleship. The cost of living has been an impediment in some areas, as well as the abundance of non-paying ministry opportunities. We've had to weigh a quality of life working full-time secular work and burning the candle in order to squeeze in some ministry. Is this what God has planned for us?
<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="color: #dd4300; font-size: 15.5px;">
For eight months, we have been ready to "go." We have been ready to immediately follow His call. And yet God's response has been "wait."</blockquote>
<br />
How does a man of action wait? And why is it so difficult? I recently heard Charles Stanley explain that "waiting on the Lord" often means "trusting in the Lord" and vice versa. The natural man in me, the experience in me, the entrepreneur, the risk-taker, the adventurer, the barbarian in me says "GO NOW." But it even troubles me now that my spirit says "WAIT" — His Spirit says "WAIT."
<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 130%; padding-top: 15px;">
A CROSSROADS OF TRANSITION</div>
So here we are. Helena, Montana has become a crossroads for us where we've experienced much joy and pain. Like the apostle Paul, we are held back from moving forward. And as we long to leave, we have also become obedient to God's will at this time. We continue to ask Him for the grace to trust Him much more that we already do, to stay somewhat planted when we desire to soar like eagles.
<br />
<br />
So for now, I continue in my job in the Copy & Print Center at Staples here in Helena. I am interviewing for both graphics and ministry positions over the phone and on Skype. I am making new connections with ministry leaders and church planters in places like Missoula, Omaha, and Phoenix. If you know of a ministry needing an experienced worship arts, former lead pastor, passionate team builder, and disciple maker — be sure and let me know. It may be the opportunity that God is orchestrating so that He can allow us to go.
<br />
<br />
But for now, we trust and wait.

At this point things are much better, so I am able to share with a positive outlook.
<br />
<br />
In mid-February, between working at Staples, applying for jobs, and investigating ministry opportunities, a seemingly small bump formed at the top of my back near my neck line.
<br />
<br />
I was checking out a friend's church plant here in Helena on that Sunday, visiting my physician on Wednesday, and landing in the emergency room and finally the hospital by that Saturday. That small bump had grown to become a painful 6-inch oval area threatening to unleash infection into my bloodstream. It had become a staph infection.
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vqgk_CjNsQo/T4zgYtCtprI/AAAAAAAAIpg/jCMW8p0iAF0/s1600/EricHospital.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: left; margin: 4px 20px 20px 0px;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Vqgk_CjNsQo/T4zgYtCtprI/AAAAAAAAIpg/jCMW8p0iAF0/s320/EricHospital.jpg" /></a>I was admitted to the local hospital here in Helena and immediately treated on heavy duty intravenous antibiotics. By Monday, MIRSA was thankfully ruled out and it was decided that the best course of action (although not my favorite) was to physically remove the infected tissue by surgery.
<br />
<br />
Within days, the infection was better and I was discharged by Thursday with large wound in my back/neck that was 7-inch-wide by 1-inch-deep. For three weeks at home, I received daily nurse visits to pack and treat my wound.
<br />
<br />
During my home hospice, I was unable to return to work and our family began to face a number of financial challenges for medication and insurance, as well as our daily needs.
<br />
<br />
We had immediate prescription costs of $600, our furnace stopped working needing $300 of repairs, one of Andrea's teeth had become infected and she required a $1000 root canal.
<br />
<br />
It was all too much. Both Andrea and I broke emotionally. As God often does through our brokenness, He was gracious to us through our friends, ministry connections, and a couple local congregations.
<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="color: #dd4300; font-size: 15.5px;">
We were humbled and brought to tears by gifts we can never repay. And while we are still struggling, God continued to provided for us through some means we could never have anticipated.</blockquote>
<br />
After being out of work for nearly four weeks, my wound was beginning to heal. I was strong enough to return to the Copy & Print Center at Staples and begin paying back what may be about $12K in medical bills. At this point, we are still not sure what we will owe when all is done, but we are grateful that my Aetna insurance through Staples became effective just the Sunday before I was admitted into the hospital.
<br />
<br />
Now in mid-April, I am coming up on nine weeks since I first visited my family physician regarding the bump. Last Saturday was the first day that we did not pack and dress the wound and the gaping hole in my back that seemed like it could never heal has amazingly grown closed and is beginning to scar over. It feels like a miracle.
<br />
<br />
But perhaps the miracle is this — that God loves us, you an me both, to care for and sustain us regardless of our failures. He does this not only in times of hardship, but in every moment, through every heartbeat, and every breath.Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02446593458527465968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23476209.post-669559318809780822012-01-03T13:49:00.000-07:002012-04-16T20:44:57.780-06:002012 Will Be A Year Of Change!<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ju6xCKaWrqc/TwNpjTqJeII/AAAAAAAAIf0/cvFWUt6zveI/s1600/2012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px;"><img border="0" height="209" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ju6xCKaWrqc/TwNpjTqJeII/AAAAAAAAIf0/cvFWUt6zveI/s320/2012.jpg" width="320" /></a>
It seems like a simple and innocent word and yet we naturally cringe at the idea of "change." No matter what state our life is in, we prefer the comfort of the familiar to the unknown elements of change.<br />
<br />
Regardless of what they say, people seldom change unless the pain of NOT CHANGING outweighs the perceived pain of embracing the unknown.<br />
<br />
You may or may not agree, because experience shows that people LIKE hearing about change and they LIKE talking about change. It tickles their ears, and yet, they are SELDOM MOTIVATED to it. Oddly enough, we were created to change. Every living organism must grow in order to continue – and growth is change. If we stop growing, we cease to live.<br />
<br />
I am pleased to look back on 2011 to see constant change and much growth in those with whom we've connected in the Helena community. As we closed the doors on the adventure called Encounter Church we saw the end of some opportunities, but now new possibilities are beginning to show. We've been calling this time of regrouping since August a "transitionary period" for the Powells, but we know that 2012 will most certainly be a year of change.<br />
<br />
Having been "released from Montana" and our ministry here, we know 2012 will be the year God guides us to a new place we can call "home." As part of that new place, God will guide us to a vibrant, progressive, and missional ministry that values worship, community, and life discipleship. It is this hope that is fueling us for now.<br />
<br />
Make no mistake, change has been difficult for us. The opportunities to thrive in Helena for Graphic Design professionals are limited, for an experienced Worship Professional and Church Planter are nonexistant, and I've found myself work my lowest pay since college. Our search for our new "home" has yielded many possibilities, but all the pieces are not yet falling into place. It's taken much longer than we anticipated.<br />
<br />
And so here we are at the beginning of a new and wondrous year. While we know it is not true, we feel a bit abandoned by God. And yet, know that this transition is a time of change, a time of evaluation, and a time of growth. So for now, we kneel at the feet of an awesome God, awaiting His orchestration in our lives, knowing that 2012 will be a year of change!Erichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02446593458527465968noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23476209.post-56231216674046489972011-11-20T17:40:00.001-07:002011-12-28T16:40:28.169-07:00Relevant WorshipAs seek out the place God wants us during this transitionary period, Andrea have been considering putting together a worship set like these guys. You know how much we feel it's important to stay relevant to the culture around us.

<br />
We've been encouraging and helping our friends get involved with other churches in Helena, and at the same time, completing the administrative tasks needed to legally dissolve Encounter Church.<br />
<br />
But what about the Powells, you may ask! We've been busy as well. I've been networking with fellow church planters all over the nation. From Boston and Virginia, to Texas, California, Utah, and Seattle. That means a lot of phone calls, Skype video chats, and a few trips here and there.<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size:130%; padding-top:15px;">
A NEW ADVENTURE</div>
With our recent experience leading a new church plant, we have a unique perspective and experience to join in with a new church planting team or vibrant ministries. I am are seeking out the new adventures that God has for us, and playing to my strengths in worship, arts, and media — but also adding in my experience in leadership, spiritual formation, and community outreach.<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size:130%; padding-top:15px;">
RECENT CONNECTIONS WE'RE EXPLORING</div>
In early August, we visited <a href="http://www.onecommunity.tv/" target="_blank">One Community Church</a> in South Jordan, Utah. Just about 25 miles South of Salt Lake City, these guys have planted and will be planting more churches in a place where <a href="http://chazzdaddy.com/2011/06/14/if-you-are-a-weak-a-church-planter-dont-read-this/" target="_blank">no one wants to plant a church</a>. We enjoyed leading worship there and offer a "shout out" to Charles, Tony, and Josh!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gggjmw4ysfg/TozuwaX_lhI/AAAAAAAAIew/nuqcMNX6ijw/s1600/Grafitti.jpg" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-gggjmw4ysfg/TozuwaX_lhI/AAAAAAAAIew/nuqcMNX6ijw/s320/Grafitti.jpg" style="float: right; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px;" width="285" /></a>In the middle of September, we met with three different church plants in the Seattle/Tacoma area of Washington. God is doing some amazing things through these people.<br>
<br>
Bobby and Kelli are making a difference in an inner-city, high poverty area of Tacoma through <a href="http://www.thepathwaytacoma.com/" target="_blank">The Pathway</a>. Keith and Kristine are doing a similar thing just north of Seattle at <a href="http://www.epiclifechurch.org/" target="_blank">Epic Life Church.</a> <br />
<br />
Finally, Gary and Molly are leading a church plant that is reaching the suburban area of Woodinville and Bothell through <a href="http://www.emmausnw.org/" target="_blank">Emmaus Church</a> in North East Seattle.<br />
<br />
We've also been busy here in Montana in October. We led worship at meeting for pastors and missionaries two weeks ago. Last Sunday, we led worship at a new church plant in Bozeman called <a href="http://crossroadschurchbozeman.org/" target="_blank">Crossroads Church</a>. View the video below if you want. Sean and Lydia are just having their first preview services. We are also helping out with worship at Big Sky Fellowship on Sunday, October 23. Big Sky was our church sponsor for Encounter, if you remember.<br />
<br>
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size:130%; padding-top:15px;">
IS GOD POINTING TOWARD THE EAST COAST?</div>
There is also a great church in ... better sit down for this one ... Richmond, Virginia area that we have also just started the beginning steps of being considered for the Worship Pastor position. At this time, I cannot yet share the name of the church, but I have personal friends that have attended this church – actually friends of friends. Here is what one friend said...<br />
<br>
<blockquote>
"It is the most creative bunch of people truly living out the Gospel. They have a heart for the city, and are in an artsy, VCU area of the city... AMAZING talent in worship, all heartfelt. I couldn't recommend a place more highly."</blockquote>
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size:130%; padding-top:15px;">
LEADING IN SEATTLE THIS SUNDAY</div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2juTsJEaJX8/TozuugHJEcI/AAAAAAAAIes/EjctiCJ_QA0/s1600/Emmaus.jpg"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2juTsJEaJX8/TozuugHJEcI/AAAAAAAAIes/EjctiCJ_QA0/s400/Emmaus.jpg" style="float: right; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px;" width="285" /></a>For now, we are excited to visit the Seattle area again. Andrik and I are driving out to <a href="http://www.emmausnw.org/" target="_blank">Emmaus Church</a> and I will be leading worship this Sunday. <br />
<br />
We would appreciate your prayers for safety, but also for connection and clarity. <br />
<br />
We've been pursuing this position in Bothell, but there are some things we feel God need to bring together regarding the cost of housing and acquiring a second job.<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size:130%; padding-top:15px;">
CONTINUED PRAYER NEEDED</div>
So while we seem to have a number of opportunities available, we are looking for the one that God has planned for us. It needs to be a fit for our personalities and gifts, how we are most effective in ministry, and for us to achieve a balance between family life and ministry.<br />
<br />
Please be praying for us.<br />

Amazing!<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FNOHG4j1prA/TmWA-lVgbBI/AAAAAAAAIOY/UOz78_MRrg8/s1600/omnom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FNOHG4j1prA/TmWA-lVgbBI/AAAAAAAAIOY/UOz78_MRrg8/s200/omnom.jpg" width="199" /></a>So after nearly three years focusing our attention and effort on the <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/search/" target="_blank">Encounter Helena blog</a>, that effort is coming to a close. And with the big life changes going on with the Powells, we will be posting here again on the e|Something blog.<br />
<br />
So along with new posts, we are in the middle of overhauling the entire look and feel. We're adding some integration with social network like Facebook and Twitter. You will also find some links to my worship profile and the Encounter website as I look for the next adventure God has in store. We hope you like it.<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, if you received this update via email, we would like to know. Please send a quick reply.

Others have come along later, and still some have just begun to pray or support this new church plant in Helena, Montana.<br />
<br />
Please take the time to read through our journey and find out why we're bringing the Encounter ministry to a close.<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 16px; padding-top: 26px;">HAVING IMPACTED HELENA</div>
As you know, we have been following God, and praying impossible prayers from the very beginning almost three years ago. God gave us this vision for Encounter Church when we had no funding and no assembled team. We sought this support from a variety of sources and began building a new church plant from scratch.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nOEfZfiFBl0/TnFzwPPb74I/AAAAAAAAIUo/tW0Ll_7MbM4/s1600/encounter-bush.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nOEfZfiFBl0/TnFzwPPb74I/AAAAAAAAIUo/tW0Ll_7MbM4/s400/encounter-bush.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: left; height: 210px; margin: 4px 20px 20px 0px; width: 172px;" /></a>With the help of ARC, SBC, and NAMB, we received assessment, confirmation, and encouragement to reach people in Helena that no one else is reaching.<br />
<br />
We're talking about those, who like us, are a bit outside-the-box, and do not fit into the traditional approach of churches in Helena. We sought to change this community, working alongside other churches, to reach people for the Kingdom helping them truly Encounter God and Jesus in their everyday life.<br />
<br />
From the early days dreaming in our living room about a this church, to Discussions at the Staggering Ox, Friday Night FWDs, the Encounter Grand Opening, and finally meeting on Sunday mornings at the Pattern House — we have shared a long and challenging journey.<br />
<br />
From that very first April in 2009, we have focused all of our intent and effort to selflessly serve our community showing them the unconditional love of Jesus in a real and tangible way. Encounter has become known in Helena as a church that serves its community. It is known as a church for people who don't like church. We have truly become a church that is FOR Helena, rather than just a church IN Helena.<br />
<br />
I am so proud and thankful of all the hard work, time, effort, and more — that individuals have put into God's vision for Encounter. These people have been, by far, the most important and significant part of our journey.<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 16px; padding-top: 26px;">MAKING DIFFICULT DECISIONS</div>
We want to share that at this time, that Andrea and I are currently praying through the process of seeking God's leading in a new season of ministry. From the beginning of the new year, we've been seriously evaluating and assessing the survivability and sustainability of Encounter Church.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P1eItHTIZdQ/ToEV1QGBiZI/AAAAAAAAIaE/hpQQpi4mXrg/s1600/1010101753.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P1eItHTIZdQ/ToEV1QGBiZI/AAAAAAAAIaE/hpQQpi4mXrg/s400/1010101753.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; height: 202px; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px; width: 269px;" /></a>While we've seen many victories and successes through the ministry of Encounter, while we've seen lives changed and the community touched, we have NOT seen a few crucial elements come to pass that will see Encounter survive in the long haul.<br />
<br />
A decision such as this is never easy. As we have continually assessed the Encounter ministry, it was an especially difficult and painful decision knowing that Encounter has made a difference in Helena.<br />
<br />
At the same time, we've communicated our needs and prayers all along. It has become clear in recent months, that God is giving us new direction. Still, the loss of Encounter Church will leave a void within the Helena community.<br />
<br />
Andrea and I have been blessed by the experiences and lessons God has granted us through this journey. And most importantly, we've been blessed by every relationship we've formed. This journey has been richly rewarding and also spiritually draining. We've learned that joy and heartbreak can occur together.<br />
<br />
<blockquote style="color: #dd4300; font-size: 15.5px;">
And so we are deeply saddened to announce that we are gracefully bringing the Encounter Church ministry to a close.</blockquote>
<br />
In the next month or two, we will continue to serve Encounter Church just as hard as we have. There are many loose ends that need to be tied up, both ministry-related, financial, and administrative. If you have been touched by the Encounter ministry, we invite you to take advantage of the opportunity to get together with us and debrief, if needed.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E63bwREzdkI/ToIYnf_zUoI/AAAAAAAAIeU/o4ErfNCfHM4/s1600/PrayerWalking08.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E63bwREzdkI/ToIYnf_zUoI/AAAAAAAAIeU/o4ErfNCfHM4/s400/PrayerWalking08.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: left; height: 147px; margin: 4px 20px 20px 0px; width: 221px;" /></a>Please know that we are in the process of meeting with a numerous people in the coming weeks. One of our main concerns now, is to help each of person make a smooth transition toward continued spiritual growth, beyond their time with Encounter.<br />
<br />
While this last Sunday, July 24, was our final worship gathering, we will continue our one-on-one discipleship and we will continue to meet together at our home for LifeGroups until Andrea and I transition to a new phase of ministry.<br />
<div class="posttitle1" style="font-size: 16px; padding-top: 26px;">SEEKING IMPOSSIBLE ADVENTURES</div>
While Andrea and I continue to minister here in Helena over the next month or two — discipling those who have connected with Encounter — we are looking for open doors into our next phase of ministry. If you know of any ministry opportunities or positions, please let me know. The key for us is to find the next spiritual adventure that God has planned for us.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRT-7GUSsJg/ToIYnhUCwlI/AAAAAAAAIec/YWkb7tWMTJk/s1600/risk.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pRT-7GUSsJg/ToIYnhUCwlI/AAAAAAAAIec/YWkb7tWMTJk/s400/risk.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; float: right; height: 288px; margin: 4px 8px 20px 20px; width: 170px;" /></a>Church planting is now engrained upon our hearts. At this time, Andrea and I are not emotionally prepared to launch and lead another church plant effort immediately, but we are not ruling it out for the future. Risking it all for Jesus and embracing uncertainty for Him is in our DNA now.<br />
<br />
We are longing to fit with some other church planting effort where we can be the part of the team that Encounter so desperately needed. I most likely will continue to pursue ministry in worship arts, still knowing that my skills and experience now cover a broader spectrum that include preaching, graphic design, leading small groups, discipling individuals, coordinating successful outreach efforts.<br />
<br />
Please know that we are in the process of meeting with a numerous people in the coming weeks. One of our main concerns now, is to help each of person make a smooth transition toward continued spiritual growth, beyond their time with Encounter.<br />
<br />
Above all, we are seeking God's leading in this. As with the personality and vision of Encounter, we are called to a ministry with a vibrant and audacious vision. A vision, that if God isn't in it, it will utterly and completely fail. We are called to reach those who otherwise would never know Christ and never set foot in a church — to minister to out-of-the-box people in unconventional ways. As Pastor Craig Groeschel says, "To reach people that have never been reached, you have to do things that no one has ever done."<br />
<br />
We are praying for some audacious, lion-chasing opportunities and ask you to pray with us as we embrace the uncertainty that lies ahead.<br />
<br />
In His Hands,<br />

Despite snow and rain throughout the week, Easter was a beautiful, sunny day — and it was the picture perfect day for a Super Fun Egg Hunt outside!<br />
<br />
We had over 24 first-timers on Easter with lots of kids. We explored what it means to "Come Awake!" and how we are called to "rise up from the grave" of the broken things in life through Jesus. Listen to the podcast <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2008/05/encounter-media-center-message-podcasts.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
After the great music and discussion during the worship gathering, we held a drawing for the "Biggest Easter Basket Ever!" It was certainly the biggest Easter basket in Helena with items donated from individuals and businesses throughout Helena.<br />
<br />
Special thanks to <a href="http://local.yahoo.com/info-17082873-van-s-thriftway-helena" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Van's Thriftway</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, </span><a href="http://lassothemoontoys.com/" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Lasso The Moon Toys</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, </span><a href="http://www.mtbookco.com/" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Montana Book & Toy Company</a><span style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">, </span><a href="http://goldwest.visitmt.com/listings/15783.htm" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Panhandler Plus</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, </span><a href="http://www.gamepods.net/" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">GamePods Jr. Downtown</a><span style="font-style: italic;">, </span><a href="http://www.capitalfret.com/" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Capital Fret</a><span style="font-style: italic;">,</span> and <a href="http://greatharvesthelena.com/" style="font-style: italic;" target="_blank">Great Harvest Bread Company</a><span style="font-style: italic;">.</span><br />
<br />
When we're all done, we went outside for a Super Fun Egg Hunt boasting over 600 eggs filled with chocolate goodies. It truly was an Awesome Easter, by all accounts, and an awesome way to connect with the community — to be a church that's not just IN Helena, but FOR Helena!<br />

<br />
Subway sandwiches, chips, and drinks were on the menu as well as some great conversation before the free concert. It was also a blessing to see 11 new guests come check out the concert and Encounter.<br />
<br />
This was the second time <span style="font-style: italic;">Temple Veil</span> played for Encounter, and we were again blown away by the raw acoustic talents of Brysson on the acoutsic guitar and DeRock on the violin, keys and vocals. Seriously awesome stuff!<br />

<br />
A group of volunteers primarily from Encounter hosted a free kids bounce house. and gave away over 250 bags of popcorn, nearly 400 servings of cotton candy, and around 350 Tootsie Pops.<br />
<br />
An estimated 600 kids and their parents came out for the event!<br />
<br />
What an awesome way to serve our community. As part of our effort to a "burning bush" in Helena, this is just another way to be a church that is not just IN Helena, but FOR Helena!<br />

As we grow together
inwardly, we must never forget that we are here to help others know
Jesus.<br />
<br />
On April 10, we cancelled our Worship Gathering specifically to pray for and walk the neighborhoods near our new gathering location, the Pattern House.<br />
<br />
On Saturday, April 9, we prayed over nearly 70 households giving away small flyers and free Tootsie to individuals. And then on Sunday, April 10, we covered even more of the neighborhood with over 200 more households. <br />

<br />
<div class="posttitle1">A PART OF HELENA</div>
Built in 1897, the Pattern House served as pay master in the early days for the Northern Pacific Railroad, to a pattern building workshop for the foundry that ran next door.<br />
<br />
In the 90's, the Pattern House became a popular coffee house in Helena, but has been vacant since 2005. Encounter is now excited to use the space to connect with the Helena community and provide a unique environment in which to Encounter God, Experience Community, and Engage Culture.<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1">OUR FIRST SUNDAY WAS PERFECT</div>
We held our first un-announced gathering this last Sunday on March 27 as a "trial run" to determine the logistics of how to setup for worship, areas for kids, and refreshments. It was a success. The Pattern House is a perfect intimate environment that is warm and welcoming. View photos of the setup below.<br />
<br />
<div class="posttitle1">WHERE TO FIND US</div>
Centrally located in Helena, just go east from Malfunction Junction (where Montana Avenue, Helena Avenue, and Lyndale meet) on Lyndale, the Pattern House is the first building on the right at 1229 E. Lyndale Ave.<br />

<br />
The Helena Food Share does an outstanding job providing emergency food assistance to families experiencing economic difficulties.<br />
<br />
There was something for everyone to do. We took on whatever projects they assigned our group. We were able to bag over 1,000 pounds of potatoes, assemble 4 crates of eggs, 36 bags of rice, and stack almost 100 cans of potato chips.<br />
<br />
We are always eager to serve and share God's love in tangible way. It's why Encounter is known as a church not just IN Helena, but a church FOR Helena.<br />

<br />
It was about diversity and community service, and featured 2 solo artists and 4 bands of local youth musicians: <span style="font-style: italic;">The 33 Cent Bet</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">High Lonesome</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Summer Downpour</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Last Minute Men</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Sarah Frazier</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Stephanie Zarling</span>.<br />
<br />
Encounter was privileged to be involved in the early planning stages with representatives from <span style="font-style: italic;">AmeriCoreVISTA</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Lewis & Clark Public Library</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Youth Connections</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Rocky Mountain Development Council</span>, and others. Later, we were able to also partner with the <span style="font-style: italic;">Staggering Ox</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">GamePods</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Capital FRET</span> to make the evening a huge success!<br />
<br />
The event was held at the <span style="font-style: italic;">Staggering Ox</span> and we had about 11 volunteers from Encounter come out to help setup, run, manage, and tear-down the stage and sound equipment. The performances were pretty awesome. Plus, the Staggering Ox was more packed than I've ever seen it! It was an honor to serve the community in this way and to be a part of the Youth Music Splash this year.<br />

<br />
The Encounter crew set up just outside of the <a href="http://www.capitalfret.com/" target="_blank">Capital FRET</a> music store on Last Chance Gulch in the heart of downtown.<br />
<br />
Serving FREE gourmet hot chocolate as people walked the downtown area for the 2010 Fall Art Walk, we saw and talked to so many people.<br />
<br />
It was packed downtown this year and we served nearly 250 cups of hot chocolate using 12 pounds of chocolate mix!<br />
<br />
This is just another way to demonstrate that Encounter is not just a church IN Helena, but we are a church FOR Helena. Here are some photos and a small video clip from the evening.<br />

<br />
We called it <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2010/10/christmas-decorating-coffee-downtown.html">Christmas Decorating & Coffee Downtown</a>.<br />
<br />
Encounter's group of nearly 22 people came out to help put up Christmas wreaths and decorate street lamps in Downtown Helena. What an awesome turn out!<br />
<br />
We had about three groups climbing ladders, fluffing the wreathes (there were some expert "fluffers" there), and snipping cable ties along Last Chance Gulch! After it was all done, we took a little time to share some coffee and fun conversation at Starbucks.<br />
<br />
Why do we do it? For us, it's just another way to be a <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2009/01/where-does-our-vision-come-from.html" target="_blank">burning bush</a> for our community — to be a church not just IN Helena, but FOR Helena. It's our way to make an impact in our community by <a href="http:/encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2008/05/community-impact.html" target="_blank">giving ourselves away</a>.<br />

<br />
We saw twice as many people as the three <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2008/05/burn-sneak-peak-worship-gatherings.html" target="_blank">Sneak Peek Worship Gatherings</a> we've been having since July. It was our largest attendance ever and I am super excited to follow up with those who indicated they want to know more about trusting in Jesus.<br />
<br />
The musicians were some of the best in Helena and really did a great job bringing an edgy and slightly loud feel to the worship. The message was called "Ignite: A Burning Bush" and we talked about being a "Burning Bush" to those friends and neighbors around us helping them to encounter God.<br />
<br />
We're very excited about what's God is doing through Encounter, and are looking forward to being a church that "ignites" Helena for years to come!
The Grand Opening was really awesome thanks to the many people behind the scenes who helped make it a reality. If you missed it, we invite you to check out our <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2010/10/ignite-worship-series-continues-sun-oct.html" target="_blank">next worship gathering</a>.<br />

<br />
There was a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, needle in the haystack game, and more — all organized by DHI and various Helena businesses.<br />
<br />
In the four hours of the <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2010/09/kids-fall-fest-at-pioneer-park-saturday.html" target="_blank">Kid's Fall Fest</a>, we went through over 300 popcorn bags, 700 cotton candy cones, and 350 Tootsie Pops. We estimate nearly 1,000 kids and their parents had a great time throughout the event!<br />
<br />
As part of our effort to a "burning bush" in Helena, we at Encounter came alongside Downtown Helena to provide for FREE two kid's inflatable bouncers, cotton candy, and popcorn for the event. What a awesome time and great opportunity to let people know about our <a href="http://encounterchurchhelena.blogspot.com/2010/09/encounter-grand-opening-on-10-10-10.html" target="_blank">Grand Opening</a> the next day!<br />
<br />
The Encounter team of volunteers did an awesome job serving our community and sharing God's love in tangible way.<br />
